How to Makeover Your Beds
By Anita Winter
If you are wanting to make an impact in your bedroom without the cost of remodeling then try updating your bed. The bed is the center piece in a bedroom so it should command great design and style. Here are a few ways to update your bed and give a new attitude to your bedroom.
Bed frame - Bed frames are important because these are the foundation of where mattresses lay. Having the right support starts by having a strong, sturdy frame. If your bed frame is in need of a face lift, feel free to paint it with a fresh coat of white or black paint. These are both classic and neutral colors.
Box spring - An exposed box spring looks tacky and cheap, so make sure that you cover it with either a bed skirt or fitted sheet. Fitted sheets used over a mattress are more modern while bed skirts are used for a traditional look. If your box spring is part of your bed's decor don't be afraid to use bold patterns and colored fitted sheets to add more interest.
Headboards - Headboards are beautiful accessories to a bed and should be utilized. Refurbishing your current headboard is easily achieved by painting, adding decoupage or antiquing. If you don't have a headboard you can easily make your own by using a decorative folding screen placed behind your bed against a wall. You can also use an upholstered piece of board by wrapping a piece of wood or particle board with batting followed by a piece of fabric to match or complement your bedding. Another great money-saving way to add interest to the wall behind your bed is to add place mats. These are not just for your dining room table. By lining them up in a grid pattern on the wall you will bring height to your bed. You'll be amazed how many colors and textures you will find to match your decor.
Rugs - Adding a rug in front of a bed will help anchor it and give balance to your room. These are great on either side of the bed as well. Rugs provide a soft and warm place to land on hardwood and tiled floors. Don't be afraid to add a rug on top of a carpet. Rugs are an accessory. Try to utilize the colors in your rug throughout the room. You don't want your rug to take away from the focal point of your bed but rather highlight the bed.
Bedding -Your bedding should be aesthetically pleasing to the eye and comfortable to the touch. Luxurious bedding is bedding that has both these characteristics. Using lots of layers on your bed will look soft and inviting. Having different textures is also important in creating a beautiful bed. Silk pillows and silk shams bring shine, while quilted fabrics show billowy softness. Ruffled throw pillows and fringed bolster pillows really complete your bed and help make it look classy and sophisticated.
Height - Changing the height of your bed can give a dramatic effect to your room. If you are going for a more Zen or Asian designed bedroom you can bring your box spring all the way down to the floor. If you want to make a "Wow" statement in your room add more height to your bed with risers.
Canopy - Canopies and bed posts are simple yet very dramatic when added to a bed. Using drapes above a bed or simple sheer curtains tied around bed posts will give a soft and relaxing feel to your room. If you love the cabana look, use white drapes and cascade them around the bed for privacy.
