How to Clean Your Comforters
Having a clean comforter is important to our health and well-being. Although washing a comforter may not be completely stress-free, the process can be easy by simply utilizing several helpful tips before you throw it in the wash.
Read the instructions
Always make sure to read the instructions on the tag of your comforter. Your comforter could be made of various materials, so make sure you don't deviate from any specific instructions listed regarding hand washing or water temperature.
Use a gentle detergent
Make sure you use a gentle detergent so you don't damage the fabric. Some comforters will instruct you to purchase a specific type or brand, but to be safe, always use detergent that doesn't contain any bleach or heavy perfumes. Strong perfumes and chemicals will break down the fabric fibers.
Take it to the local laundromat
Most
bed comforters are large and fluffy and require more space than the average washing machine. Laundromats usually have larger washing machines which will accommodate larger amounts of clothing and bedding. If you don't have specific instructions given on your comforter make sure to wash it in cool water on the gentle spin cycle. Heat will tend to shrink and fade the bedding.

Hand wash it
If your
comforter cleaning calls for hand washing, use either a large laundry room sink or a clean bathtub. Most comforters will need to be dry cleaned but depending on the type of fill you have, hand washing is fine. Add one cap full of gentle detergent to at least 10 gallons of water, then add your comforter and make sure it is properly soaked. Use strong vigorous arm movements to agitate and clean the
bedding. After you have drained and gently squeezed out the dirty soapy water, add clean water to rinse off any remaining residue. Ring out the bedding carefully, keeping in mind not to tear or damage the fabric. When you hang the comforter to dry, make sure you carefully drape the comforter on a clothes line so that all sides dry equally. If you don't have a clothes line, try hanging it on the shower rod above the bath.
Drying the comforter
If the instructions on the comforter allow you to use a dryer make sure to use a large capacity dryer so there is room to dry evenly. It is always wise to dry the comforter on the lowest heat possible. Afterward, If needed, you can apply an iron on low setting to iron out any wrinkles.
When in doubt, dry clean
Dry cleaning the
bedding comforter is always a sure way to get the comforter clean without any damage. Although it can be expensive, it will save on time and labor.
Use a bed sheet
If you want to protect your comforter and keep from having to wash it often, place a sheet between the comforter and fitted sheet. This will allow you to keep your comforter cleaner and longer. The more time there is between washings the better.
